Evaluating technological collaborative opportunities: a cognitive modeling perspective
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to identify the managerial and economic information that top executives take into consideration when assessing opportunities for technological collaboration. Data are collected from a sample of 93 executives working in industries in which technological development is a prerequisite. Results show that executives do not consider all available information into their decision models and that the characteristics of the top executives have an impact on their assessments regarding the desirability of technological collaborative opportunities. Moreover, no individual theoretical frameworks has been found to adequately demonstrate the informational dimensions seen as relevant in the assessment of collaborative opportunities. Implications for further studies and application are discussed.

The effects of executives' experiences and perceptions on their assessment of potential technological alliances
Article Abstract:
A study tested hypotheses positing that the experiences and perceptions of senior executives have direct and indirect effects on their assessments of potential technological alliances. Data were culled from the response of 91 executives to a survey questionnaire. Findings revealed that top executives having a technical education put more value on the opportunities afforded by the alliance than counterparts with other types of education. In addition, executives whose firms perceived to be technologically oriented and successful in past technological alliances were found to be more receptive to opportunities arising from technological alliances and less focused on the risk level of the venture. Implications for research and practice are discussed.
