Expert beyond experience
Article Abstract:
Experts are able not only to deal with problems they have encountered before but also to tackle new problems successfully. This is due to the use of memory structures that allow information to be retrieved from long-term memory at the same time as assimilating and analysing new information. New information also alters and revises the memory structures so that learning takes place and the expert can adapt to changed circumstances. Mental modelling enables experts to construct models of the real world and to make predictions about the effects of particular decisions. Accountancy training should encourage the development of expert memory structures.
