Experts: Vendors, buyers have roles in improving port security gear

Experts speaking in a Webcast on the state of the US port security that was sponsored by domestic Preparedness.com said that vendors of port-security technology, such as cargo-screening gear, must do more to ensure that their systems can be integrated, and interoperable with other systems. They added that the port authorities and other buyers of port-security equipment must do more to maximize the value of sophisticated sensors and other technology.

" Major investment" needed to meet 100 percent cargo screening

Senior lawmakers passed a legislation of compulsory 100 percent screening of the cargo entering the US with an aim to block the takeover of the US ports by a Middle Eastern firm. It was observed that the screening would be very instructive to a knowledgeable screener and also they could be set up effectively at the ports of entry and at the seaports.

Port security bill praised, but seen costing too much

A pending congressional bill to bolster port security against terrorist attacks would cost a lot and might slow the flow of imported goods entering the US. The bill calls for establishing Joint Operations Centers enhancing information sharing and coordination of security efforts.
