Wintry investors head for Greek sun
Article Abstract:
Greek stocks became more attractive to foreign investors after Greece decided to join the exchange rate mechanism of the European Union (EU) in Mar 1998. This led to the Greek drachma being devalued and a commitment to a reduction in the budget deficit. Interest rates have risen to 13.4% compared with 11% after the drachma was devalued. Inflation has dropped to 5% in Aug 1998 and this drop in inflation should mean that interest rates can be reduced.
