Focusing on technology, operations, and processes at Witco Houston
Article Abstract:
Witco Houston restructured its operations by grouping its employees into work teams. When E. Gary Cook took over as CEO of Witco in 1994, his vision was for it to be the world-leader in the specialty chemicals business. His mandate led to a reduction in staff, assets were consolidated and business processes were simplified. Its factories were shifted to a team-based work environment and were exhorted to do more with the same or fewer workers. Employees were empowered to make decisions regarding their jobs with the expectation that they would feel better with their work.

Focusing on visible management at a USPS distribution center
Article Abstract:
The system of visible management, which calls for the establishment and management of an organization's performance targets, enabled a United States Postal Service (USPS) distribution center to raise improvement to double-digit levels. Visible management is implemented to align corporate goals with organizational strategies and to determine priority areas. This study of the USPS distribution center demonstrated that without a well-defined approach for strategy deployment, improvements could not be realized even with comprehensive strategic planning sessions.
