France: don't panic
Article Abstract:
French stock prices dropped in May 1997 following a strong performance by the Socialists in national elections. Profits could be affected by the Socialists' policies, as could planned membership of European monetary union. The political right could still win in the second round of voting. The Socialists do not oppose Emu, though they are concerned about its possible deflationary impact. Less pressure from deflation could help some companies and profits may be aided by productivity gains. Stocks also appear cheap, so could perform well.

Gallic conundrums
Article Abstract:
The French stock market could improve its performance after presidential elections have been held in April and May 1995. The market has performed poorly in the two years to 1995, hit by lower profits in 1993 and corruption scandals in 1994. Economic recovery is underway and corporate earnings are improving. Problems could arise if interest rates remain high, and an attempt to reduce the budget deficit could affect the stock market. Devaluation would help the stock market by boosting the economy.

French equities: disappointment
Article Abstract:
The French stock market is likely to be disappointing, according to James Capel. Companies face strong competition and cannot shed jobs easily due to the weight of the state in the economic system. Profit margins have thus been hit by an inability to reduce costs. Equities appears to be good value compared to bonds, but this could reflect pessimism over earnings growth. The france is not likely to be devalued before year-end 1996, but a devaluation would help boost share prices.
