GEC under Sir Roger
Article Abstract:
GEC has appointed Roger Hurn as its chairman. Three brokers of a sample of six rate the company's stocks a buy, and three rate them a hold. The buyers are UBS, which sees Hurn's appointment as positive, Charterhouse Tilney, and Williams de Broe. SG Securities is a holder, and criticises a decision not to consider a merger with British Aerospace. NatWest Markets is also a holder, as is Salomon Smith Barney which sees a process of change at GEC, though this is not occurring as rapidly as some people would like.

European manoeuvres
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Siemens Plessey by British Aerospace (BAe) places BAe in a strong position prior to the consolidation that is forecast for the European defense industry. BAe won its bid for Siemens Plessey with an alliance with Dasa, which is buying part of Siemens Plessey's German defense operations. BAe is buying Siemens Plessey Electronics Systems, an Australian operation, and Siemens Plessey Systems, a UK operation. European defense companies have to consolidate in order to compete with US rivals.
