GEC without the lord

GEC has reported a profit of 1 billion pounds sterling, and has a new managing director. The company's share price has risen with the appointment of George Simpson. Three brokers from a sample of six rate the shares a buy, while three rate them a hold. Buyers include UBS and Credit Lyonnais Lang. Lehman Brothers is also a buyer and sees opportunities in selling smaller GEC subsidiaries. Panmure Gordon and Greig Middleton are both holders.

Prospects for the US defence industry look good, especially given Pres Bush's plans to raise defence spending. While the long-term prospects for the military divisions of some firms appears very bright, their stock prices already seem to take account of much of this good news.
