Diseases of wheat and barley in conservation cropping systems of the semiarid Pacific Northwest
Article Abstract:
Changes in wheat and barley conservation cropping systems of the semiarid Pacific Northwest have made disease management in the region more difficult. Disease management with conservation tillage tends to be more complex and expensive than with inversion tillage. Crops planted at the onset of autumn to decrease soil erosion in winter, such as unirrigated winter wheat in rotation with summer fallow in low rainfall zones, are more prone to diseases. Some diseases affect high-residue seedbeds more than low-residue seedbeds.

GIS and simulation technologies for assessing cropping systems management in dry environments
Article Abstract:
Computer based methods such as crop growth simulation models, weather generators, geographical information systems, and risk assessment and economic models provide data that help in determining the effectiveness of cropping system management methods. The assessment of cropping systems management in dry regions using computer simulations is more effective than that using traditional methods. The parameters that need to be measured are long-term productivity, sustainability and the environmental impact of cropping systems.

Effect on cultural practices on barley and durum wheat yields in semiarid regions of Tunisia
Article Abstract:
The use of new high-yield varieties and the improvement of cultural practices will increase the rainfed crop production in Tunisia. Such approach includes the best combination and timely use of tillage for water conservation and seedbed preparation, choice of high-yield varieties, optimal seeding, and weed control and fertilizer applications. New varieties should first be tested to determine whether they are suited to the climatic, soil and management conditions of the area where they shall be grown.
