General retailers
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom retail industry has been affected by higher interest rates and there is concern that recession could hit the industry. UK interest rates may not drop until year-end 1998, and consumer spending growth is estimated at 2.2% for 1998. down from 5.2% for 1997, and less than the 2.6% forecast for 1999, according to Verdict. Costs are rising due to preparations for the millennium, and staff costs cannot easily be cut since retailers are seeking to attract customers by improving their service.

Retailers prepare for the big chill as Wal-Mart deal threatens margins
Article Abstract:
Wal-Mart has made a bid for Asda which could affect margins for United Kingdom general and food retailers. Wal-Mart has advanced logistics and purchasing power. The performance of Tesco and Sainsbury's stocks shows that there is concern over the impact of the takeover.
