Germany's energy tax plans trigger a chemical reaction
Article Abstract:
BASF could move some of its activities away from Germany if the government implements some of its tax plans. Companies are to pay less in terms of pension contributions, but energy costs will rise for BASF, which may move energy-intensive plants abroad. The company has also been affected by problems in the region it defines as Asia-Pacific and Africa, with 3rd qtr 1998 sales down by 14%. BASF aims to develop activities that are less cyclical. Profit forecasts for the company have been downgraded.

New century, new ICI
Article Abstract:
Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) has moved away from commodity chemicals and toward specialty chemicals. The company has acquired the specialty chemicals division of Unilever and is selling its polyester film, titanium dioxide, and ploymer and polester intermediates activities to Du Pont. ICI should be less exposed to business cycles and currency changes as a result of these moves, and the company has obtained a good price in the Du Pont deal.
