Long-term winners
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom investment trusts offer a number of advantages to investors seeking a managed portfolio, but there has been concern over their discount levels. This concern has allowed some short-term operators to enter the market and seek ways of delivering value to stockholders in the short term. Yet investment trusts perform well as long-term investments. The industry is seeking to attract new kinds of customers, such as those repaying mortgages and saving for a pension.

Safety catches
Article Abstract:
Protected funds have become popular with United Kingdom investors who are concerned that the bull market in stocks could end. Protected funds can offer annual and initial management charges that compare quite well with mainstream funds. They do, however, involve an opportunity cost which means that a protected investment does not rise by as much as the market as a whole. Protected funds are thus not appropriate for investors who are simply seeking high returns.
