Global corporate competition: who's winning, who's losing, and the R&D factor as one reason why
Article Abstract:
A study of leading corporations based in Europe, the US, and Asia in 15 major industries for the period 1960-1986 indicates changes in global growth rates can be linked to trends in industrial competitiveness, long-term returns to shareholders, and employment alterations. Results, based on the analysis of an 83-firm subset of the general database, suggest that one important element of business' growth rate and gains and losses in market share is research and development. Results also indicate that because many UK and US businesses have lost world-wide market share compared to Asian and European businesses in the past decade, it can be postulated that the reduction may be due to a lack of investment in technology on the part of US and UK firms.
