Golden days for the big four
Article Abstract:
The Swedish banking industry was affected by a drive toward consolidation in 1997 but banks are focusing in organic growth in 1998. Bank stocks have performed better than the market as a whole and further stock price rises are likely. The big four Swedish banks are the most profitable in Europe and each has a profitable niche. Handelsbanken focuses on retail banking and mortgages, and has market leadership in Swedish mortgages following the acquisition of Stadshypotek.

Food for thought?
Article Abstract:
The Swedish banking industry has undergone consolidation, and this has involved seeking foreign partners, as well as mergers within Sweden itself. There are four major lenders which dominate Swedish banking. They include MeritaNordbanken, created from the merger of Nordbanken with Merita, the latter being a Finnish concern. Meanwhile, banks are seeing a drop in their share of the savings market, while the share accounted for by mutual funds is increasing.
