Great Portland Estates: portfolio expansion move

Great Portland Estates is carrying out a share issue and aims to raise 96.7 million pounds sterling. The company has seen a drop in its share price of nearly 10% due to poor market reaction. Shareholders have until Feb 18 1997 to pay for their new shares. They are offered four new shares per 25 shares they possess. The rights issue circular does not mention specific projects though the company's real estate portfolio will be expanded following the share offer.

Land Securities is a UK real estate company which has been affected by problems in the UK real estate market that have depressed the company's share price. A survey of six stockbrokers found one rating the shares a buy, three rating the shares a sell, and two arguing for a hold. The buyer is SBC Warburg which foresees a recovery in the UK real estate industry in 1996. Sellers include Merrill Lynch which does not see rents rising by much in 1996.
