Great Universal Stores(performance of Great Universal Stores; includes related notes)
Article Abstract:
Great Universal Stores (GUS) is specialising into databases to manage retailing operations, and is shedding its previous role as a conglomerate with interests in real estate and retailing. The company has carried out seven acquisitions in the 22 months that David Wolfson has been chairman. Earnings have stagnated and some 2 billion pounds of debt has been taken on. The company is also acquiring Argos, a catalog retailer. Argos is likely to face increased competition, but the information services diversification is going well.
