Growing up
Article Abstract:
UK investment funds geared to providing an income are being launched in large numbers in early 1995. The funds include a UK growth fund from Morgan Grenfell, based on a belief that the UK economy will perform well. There are also ethical funds such as one launched by Henderson Touche Remnant which avoids companies involved in armaments, tobacco, pornography, gambling, environmental damage and abuse of rights of humans and other animals. The fund offers a yield which is better than the norm for ethical funds.

Positive expansion
Article Abstract:
Ethical investors may favor companies involved in particular activities such as those that help the community, and they may avoid investing in companies seen as involved in harmful activities. Greater flexibility can be found by investing abroad, especially since market-based solutions are common in the United Kingdom, and they may not be perceived as ethical. Investors can influence companies' behavior, especially as companies have become more sensitive to public opinion.

The green machine
Article Abstract:
Ethical investment is becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom and there are new entrants in this market as established players launch ethical funds. Pioneers include Friends Provident, while Sun Life is among the newcomers to this field. Ethical investments accounted for more than 2.2 billion pounds sterling on Jun 30 1998 compared with 1 billion pounds in 1996. Volatility can be a problem where ethical funds invest in smaller companies from the UK.
