Wholesale changes
Article Abstract:
The Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) can be traced back to the Co-op Society, set up in 1844 with the aim of helping members. The wholesaler was set up by retail co-operatives in 1863 and has a million members. Social change has left the CWS questioning its role. A survey of consumers found a demand for better labelling with information on ethical and animal rights issues. The Co-operative Bank also emphasises ethical investments and advertises this pledge.
