Head-hunters seek creative accountants
Article Abstract:
British design houses, specializing in everything from interior and architectural design to packaging and graphic design, are in need of accountants with a creative flair. As design companies gain more stock market listings and continue to command higher revenues in the marketplace, the accounting tasks performed by and for these firms becomes increasingly sophisticated. Accountants can greatly assist these firms by stressing that whether an enterprise is operating in manufacturing or service areas, the accounting techniques to use (such as budgeting) are the same. One area in which accounting services can improve design companies' operations is instruction as to budgeting and monitoring special project costs. The faster than normal business pace of the design markets and the above-average salaries accountants can command by joining design firms are discussed.

Cash flows along the canal
Article Abstract:
Former corporate financial director Tim Broghlan is now the driving force behind Braunston Marina, the largest marina in the inland waterways system. Coghlan embarked on a major upgrading program after acquiring the marina in 1988 with a bank loan and money raised through a Business Expansion Scheme (BES) offering. The upgrading program included the restoration of historic buildings, modern water and electric facilities, and investments in dock machinery and equipment. The marina is now flourishing and has shown a modest profit in just its second year of business. It offers a comprehensive narrowboat service and serves as a center for canal-related businesses. Coghlan has reduced his stake from the original 50% to 33% after launching a second successful BES offering to help finance expansion. His future plans include the development of other marinas.

Article Abstract:
Geka Manufacturing Ltd managed to obtain the funding necessary for the construction of a factory extension and the purchase of new equipment through non-repayable grants and commercial loans. The manufacturer of plastic packaging for cosmetics required a total of 800,000 pounds sterling for the construction project. Of the total amount of funding, 25% was in the form of non-repayable grants, such as the Regional Selective Assistance grant, the Regional Development Grant, a site preparation grant, and instant relief grant. Other sources of financing were through low-interest loans, roll-over loans, bank overdrafts, and leasing arrangements for factory equipmment. The company's success in grant applications can be attributed to proper timing and proper placing.
