Horticultural trade under NAFTA: will it hurt US farm business?
Article Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the US, Mexico and Canada has raised questions on the effect of free trade on the future of the US horticultural products industry. NAFTA opponents fear that Mexico's specialization in the production of labor-intensive goods, which cover horticultural products, will allow it to intensify export trade and give it a greater share of the market than the US. Furthermore, Mexico has cheaper labor cost and greater labor supply than the US. An analysis of the production potential of Mexico and its implications to trade is presented.

Comparative performance of Southern Plains and US farm businesses
Article Abstract:
Recovery from the farming crisis of the 1980's has been slowest among farmers in Texas and Oklahoma. A study of the performances of farms in those states to US farms as a whole shows that farms with sales between $40,000 and $249,999 did considerably better in the US generally. A low income generally hurts farmers' ability to borrow, and any further cuts in subsidies to those states will further slow their recovery.

Composite price expectations: An empirical analysis for the Spanish horticultural sector
Article Abstract:
The extent to which price expectations in Spain's horticultural sector are formulated by available information is evaluated. A combination of rational expectation models and lagged price expectation models is advocated in the analysis, which indicate that market information is being used in complement with lagged prices and a rational expectation model is most suitable.
