How does knowledge flow? Interfirm patterns in the semiconductor industry
Article Abstract:
A study investigated the flow of information among firms in a knowledge-intensive sector. Data used for this research were provided by a sample of 134 employees in semiconductor and semiconductor equipment companies, 96 of which were employed by US firms and 27 by Japanese firms. Findings revealed that both public and private mechanisms are employed for interfirm knowledge sharing despite a highly competitive environment. Nevertheless, public mechanisms are favored in Japanese companies while private channels are preferred in the US. Most of the mechanisms were found to impose limited controls on the use of the shared knowledge. The advantages of sharing were found to be the improvement of strategic plans, inclusion in professional networks and coordination of industry standards.

Knowledge sourcing by foreign multinationals: patent citation analysis in the U.S. semiconductor industry
Article Abstract:
A study examined knowledge sourcing by foreign multinationals through a patent citation analysis as well as interviews in the American semiconductor industry. Findings revealed that foreign subsidiaries in the US favor primarily local knowledge in their innovation. Foreign firms employ regional knowledge more significantly than similar domestic firms. European and Korean firms allocate their foreign investment for offsetting their native technological shortcomings. Foreign firms were also found to participate in the development of local technology, as evidenced by the significant percentage of patent citations that are local. Thus, it is erroneous to view foreign firms as merely recipients of technological knowledge because they are also contributors.

Strategic alliances and interfirm knowledge transfer
Article Abstract:
A study investigated transfers of knowledge among firms belonging to common strategic alliances. This research examined the overlapping of technological resources among partner firms as a result of their membership in their alliances. Findings revealed that equity schemes result in increases in knowledge transfer. Moreover, 'absorptive capacity' was found to explain the degree of transfer of technological capability in some alliances. However, results also hinted that the capabilities-acquisition perspective does have its limits. Lastly, the capabilities of partner firms were revealed to diverge further in a significant subset of alliances, supporting the view that alliances can generate greater specialization.
