Hung up on telecoms
Article Abstract:
Developments in the German telecommunications industry include the sale of a 17% stake in Thyssen Telecom by Thyssen, which will use the proceeds to help fund a bid for a stake of 49.9% in DBKom. DBKom owns the only national telecoms network in Germany, apart from the one owned by Deutsche Telekom. Meanwhile Deutsche Telekom has brought in a new charging structure which includes lower prices for large business clients. These reductions have led to protests from other telecoms groups, who also claim that long-term contracts used by Deutsche Telekom will hinder competition.

Telekom in a tangle
Article Abstract:
The German bill for liberalizing the telecoms industry was vetoed by the upper house in Jun 1996. The veto could benefit Deutsche Telekom since barriers to entry could be imposed by requiring companies to pay charges if they use underground cable. The decision may not be approved by the European Union and confusion has been created prior to the flotation of Deutsche Telekom, scheduled for fall 1996. Parliament is scheduled to take a break from Jul 1996 and the confusion will increase of the issue has not been tackled by then.
