IRELAND: PAY AWARD FOR TESCO STAFF
Article Abstract:
Staff working for Tesco in Ireland will benefit from a new pay deal, which has streamlined 42 different rates down to just two, and will mean increases of up to 15% with immediate effect. The premium plus rate will apply to Dublin and Cork, the maximum here being IR[pound] 6.45 per hour. Elsewhere the premium rate applies, with a maximum of IR[pound] 4.24. To qualify for the top hourly rate however, employees must have had at least five years experience. The minimum starting rate will be IR[pound] 4.40 as from April 2000. The pay award, which also includes commitments on paternity leave, places Tesco in second place in the Irish retail sector, behind Marks & Spencer.

Article Abstract:

News International is to open a special plant in London to under the wrapping operation. The extra sales make the 5% cover charge worthwhile, but the group acknowledges the environmental concerns that would apply, if all retailers wanted newspapers wrapped in polythene bags.
