Independent Energy
Article Abstract:
Independent Energy has entered recently into the electricity supply market, and its stock price has not been affected by regulatory uncertainty, unlike that of many utilities. The company has contracted out a number of operations and haslow risks with an operation that is relatively low cost. The company has a generating plant of its own, which helps to boost profit margins. The company plans to expand into mainland Europe, and to offer other services such as gas supply and telecoms, since the demand for its electricity sdupplies could see slower growth.

Electricity generators
Article Abstract:
Electricity-generating companies in the UK are having to diversify into other areas of the electricity market, as pressures such as technological change, intensify. The government wants wholesale electricity prices to fall 10% in the medium term, reform of electricity-trading arrangements, disposal of more capacity, competition and the separation of supply and distribution. Progress is being made on some of the issues, and generators are seeking to limit their exposure to the fall in prices, by buying supply companies.

Swalec top of the shopping list
Article Abstract:
South Wales Electricity (Swalec) will be an easy acquisition target due to its small size, once the UK government's share block has expired. The company has bought back a 7% stake and aims to acquire a further 10%. Swalec's dividend growth is likely to be above average and it holds a large stake in the National Grid Company in terms of its value on the stock market. Swalec's costs are high, and a potential bidder would be able to reap benefits from reducing costs.
