Interindividual differences in the subjective valuation of leisure time utility
Article Abstract:
The effects of a change in shift systems on the distribution of the value of leisure time of shiftworkers are investigated. Results show that the change in shift systems experienced by the experimental group does not alter the manner in which the group attributes the value of leisure time. Moreover, shiftworkers conform to the traditional concept of an evening and weekend leisure time, and the nature of their leisure time is dependent on their lifestyle.

Although there is no optimal shift system in the workplace, some important recommendations for the design of shift systems are presented. Moreover, it is important that workers actively participate in the planning anddesign stage. Lastly, the implementation strategy is equally important for the acceptance of the shift system.

How fast should the night shift rotate? A rejoinder
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate night shift rotations. Analysis shows that the application of permanent night shifts does not match the application of more useful rotating three-shift systems of Britain. Industrial production studies also show that minimal variation in output occurs among shifts. Night shifters either want little contact with management or have important things to attend to during the day.
