Organizing competitor analysis systems
Article Abstract:
Michael Porter, in his seminal book, 'Competitive Strategy', stated that modern corporations need to implement competitor analysis (CA) through an organized competitor intelligence system. A study of three large multinational firms, General Motors, Eastman Kodak, and British Petroleum, was conducted to elucidate the processes of implementing organized CA functions. The CA functions in all three firms were spread but part of interconnected systems rather than being organized as a single CA department. The companies found the CA system offers management valuable benefits in various areas, including sensitizing employees on the challenges posed by competitors, for comparing the firm with others for a set of key variables, and in legitimating certain proposals and for soliciting support for those proposals.
