Dragons apparent
Article Abstract:
Far East funds performed well in 1999, and should continue to recover, helped by a more optimistic outlook for the Japanese economy, and plans for Chinese membership of the World Trade Organization. There is also a process of restructuring in East Asia that should favor stock prices. There are still risks from increases in US interest rates and a possible drop in US stock prices. Countries likely to perform well include China and Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea, while telecoms and technology are sectors that look set to do well.

Still vulnerable
Article Abstract:
Financial markets in east Asia are vulnerable to additional shocks, and measures taken in Asia are not enough to tackle the problem. Japan is most likely to be affected by slower growth in the region, while Europe is likely to be least affected. Japanese banks have lent in Asia and the crisis will lead to additional problems in the banking industry in Japan. Growth could improve from 1999, but it is not clear whether the timing is right to invest in the region.
