Irish highs
Article Abstract:
Ireland has grown from a farm-based economy that was widely considered to be Western Europe's basket case into one of the most attractive locations for high-technology companies. In fact, it is now being called the Celtic tiger because of growth rates comparable to those of South East Asian economies and inflation rates similar to those of Germany. The impressive pace of its economic development is illustrated by the fact that Ireland may be one of only a handful of countries that will be able to meet the Maastricht criteria for European monetary integration. The country's economic success can be attributed to an opportune confluence of demographic trends, including falling birth rates, the entry of more women into the labor pool and reverse emigration flows. Ireland has also been helped by its membership in the European Union, its fairly modern telecommunications infrastructure, a science-oriented education system and peaceful industrial relations.

Rising from the ashes
Article Abstract:
Malaysia is trying to assure investors that its economic slowdown will soon be over. The economy was adversely affected, first by the haze that blanketed much of Southeast Asia due to Indonesia wildfires, and then by the economic turmoil that has rapidly spread throughout the region. To restore investor confidence in the country, leading local businessmen recently launched an aggressive international advertising campaign with the theme 'Malaysia - Bullish on Bouncing Back.' Some foreign observers believe that the present economic uncertainty presents a good positioning opportunity for investors. However, while there are a number of cheap deals to be had, analysts caution that investors should carefully examine what they are getting into. Among the issues that need closer scrutiny are the changing policies of banks and financial institutions, and their target corporation's history, finances and adherence to accounting standards.
