January: price rise likely
Article Abstract:
January tends to be a good month for share prices, analysing data from 1919 to 1994. There is a dispute as to why this occurs, but January has performed better in recent years, especially since 1980. Calendar years prior to US presidential elections are also good years to hold shares, and January is the best month in these years. Investors should be wary of shares in the first half of January when prices have fallen in the five years prior to 1995, though they usually rise in the second half of January.

Earnings scare
Article Abstract:
Technology company share prices performed less well on Wall Street in Oct 1995 following a profit warning from Novell leading to concern over earnings for technology companies in general. Companies which saw a drop in their share prices include Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett Packard and Motorola. Motorola also issued third quarter 1995 results which were under expectations. Novell has seen a drop in sales for its WordPerfect software which has not yet been put on the market for users of Windows 95.

Global strategy: growth message
Article Abstract:
The major world economies are likely to see an increase in economic growth rates, according to American Express Bank's John Calverley. Tight fiscal policy and a tightening inmonetary policy will counter growth, and inflation is seen as a problem mainly in the US, though interest rates are not likely to rise sharply there. Stocks are likely to perform better than bonds. Stock markets in Japan and mainland Europe offer more promise than US and UK markets.
