Japan: premium problem
Article Abstract:
Japanese banks are having to pay more to borrow money due to the bad debt problem in the Japanese banking system. Two credit unions failed in summer 1995 and this has increased concern over the stability of Japanese banking. The Japanese authorities have promised support and the US Federal Reserve can provide standy arrangements if a Japanese bank has problems in the US. There is still concern over Japanese banks and this is likely to endure until public funds are openly used to help the system

Japan: biting the bullet
Article Abstract:
Japanese banks have performed well in terms of operating profits, but have announced large losses after writing off bad debts. The banks accumulated bad debts when the Japanese real estate market collapsed in 1990. Japanese banks have also been favored by a rise in share prices in 1995 to 1996. The banks have eliminated much of their bad debt problems, but smaller banks still face problems, and new bad debts are also being revealed, while conditions may not be as favorable in 1996 to 1997.

Japan: over the worst
Article Abstract:
Japanese banks face bad debt problems, but they may have overcome the worst of their problems. The Japanese government plans to liquidate housing loan companies which have gone bankrupt and have been the most serious aspects of the crisis. The Finance Ministry has announced that a special body will be set up to deal with banks that have collapsed. Interim results from the Japanese banking industry indicate that the bigger banks aim to write off bad debts rapidly.
