Jobs still squeezed
Article Abstract:
The current employment prospects of chartered accountants in the UK are grim. Figures from the Federation of Recruitment and Employment Services Ltd show that starting salaries have either stagnated or fallen drastically. The starting pay of senior managers, for instance, have decreased from 20,000 pounds sterling to 15,000 pounds in Scotland, from 18,000 pounds to 15,000 pounds in the North East and from 22,000 pounds to 21,000 pounds in Greater London. Fringe benefitsare also being reduced significantly. Cars and cash options are no longer common components of the benefits package. Despite this bleak outlook, there are still employment opportunities in some sectors of the profession, includingpersonal tax, forensic accounting, computer audit and specialist areas within management consultancy. Some industry observers remain optimistic for the future, citing slight improvements in the job market since the start of 1993.

Looking and learning
Article Abstract:
Two major ventures that use video as a medium for accounting education are being launched in 1992. The first venture, a project of the Television Education Network (TEN), offers a set of accountancy videos that are mailed monthly to subscribers. It allows subscribers to select from two levels of complexity. The first level covers 11 monthly videos that are between an hour and two hours long, while the second level offers 15 monthly videos that run for up to three hours. The second venture, which is set to be introduced through BBC Select, allows subscribers to tape weekly programs that are broadcast in the early hours of the morning. It is similar in format to TEN's videos and covers a wide variety of accounting topics. Both ventures have been approved by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and can be used to earn points for continuing professional education.
