ECT Cellular plc supplies cellular telephone equipment as well as airtime services throughout the UK, and had profits of 491,000 pounds sterling on turnover of 9.8 million pounds sterling in 1987. ECT Cellular plc Fin Dir Jenni Williams left public practice to join the firm in 1987. She has computerized the firm's accounting system, thereby simplifying the client billing function and improving management information, and anticipates enormous growth for ECT. The company sells its equipment to phone and car dealers as well as directly to the public, and plans to open more of its own shops to cater to the increasing demand for cellular phones. Its subsidiary CP Finance & Leasing leases cars as well as ECT's entire range of equipment, and its subsidiary ECT Mobile Radio is a licensed Band III service provider. ECT's board is currently considering alternatives for raising external capital opportunities as the forthcoming pan-European system for cellular telephones.

Projecting a professional image

Business presentations can be made more interesting with the use of technological aids. Presenters who are not comfortable with sophisticated presentation systems may stick to traditional aids, which may also be enhanced by technology. For example, printed information will look more appealing and more business-like if they were printed on a laser printer. Likewise, an overhead projector (OVP) can be made more sophisticated by using it with the liquid crystal display (LCD) technology, thus enabling the OVP to project whatever appears on a computer screen onto a wall or a screen. Those ready for computer programs for business presentations may want to use the Videoshow, a software and hardware package that makes graphic images that are shown using a separate display unit. The emergence of 'multimedia' is expected to change business presentations even more.

Advertising is now being used not only for direct sales, but also as a method for increasing company visibility and brand recognition and goodwill. Advertising agencies have grown in response and they also offer direct marketing services, sales promotion companies, and public relations consultants. The increasing involvement of above-the-line advertisers in below-the-line interests has been brought on by: increasing customer awareness in below-the-line profit areas; increasing emphasis on direct marketing and lifestyle targeting; and increasing use of the marketing budget as a strategic resource. When shopping for an advertising agency, customers should look for well managed companies that can control all aspects of advertisement production and deal effectively with government regulations.
