Keeping a corporate clout

The corporate market for stockbrokers in north west England could benefit from ripples from growth in the market in the south east, which is larger. Albert E. Sharp is building up a corporate finance unit and has 73 quoted clients from the corporate sector. The market is volatile in April 1997, according to Wise Speke's Robert Race who sees this volatility as hindering new issues. Wise Speke is involved in two flotations and sees activity as having been focused on 1st qtr 1997 to avoid uncertainty.

Stockbrokers in north west England have seen major changes. These include the acquisition of Neilson Cobbold by Rathbone Brothers, and a change in ownership for Greig Middleton. The industry faces the challenge of a new electronic systems for share settlement, called Crest, and the planned introduction of an order-driven system. Some brokers are concerned about whether Crest will have able to deal with large-scale share issues by building societies which are demutualising.
