Leading a complex dance
Article Abstract:
The question of who leads corporate finance deals in Scotland is a much-debated issue. There are those who say that deal leadership is not determined by experience nor by the strength of the corporate negotiator's personality, but by who succeeds in getting in the deal first. Some claim that accountants are in the best position to take the lead since they are more corporate-finance oriented. Others argue that it is the venture capitalists that are driving deals because they are the ones with the money. Still others are maintaining that entrepreneurs should be the deal-leader considering their single-mindedness and their profit-orientation. Merchant banker Guy Stenhouse of Noble Grossart attempts to settle the argument by reminding advisers that the customer is king and should therefore be allowed to drive the deal.

Keep your balance in the upturn
Article Abstract:
The formation of capital in the post-recession period will be a major challenge for corporations in Scotland. Greater use of capital stock will be evident as firms try to strengthen their balance sheets. Small- to medium-sized businesses will be in the best position to take advantage of these opportunities because of their flexibility and ability to effectively tap niche markets. However, these growing companies are expected to experience difficulty in raising equity capital, particularly long-term investment capital, since investors may not immediately see gains in capital. Getting capital investments could pave the way for additional funding for these small- and medium-sized companies.
