Leeds and Bradford: City fathers issue warning
Article Abstract:
Leeds, England, has seen an expansion of telephone-based financial services and banking centers which have led to some 10,000 jobs being created. There is concern that, despite the benefits of this expansion, the city is becoming too heavily weighted in the direction of public administration and financial services, losing the economic diversity which helped Leeds weather previous recessions. There are 54,600 manufacturing jobs compared with 59,400 business and financial services jobs in the area.

Inward investment
Article Abstract:
Leeds and Bradford, England, have successfully attracted investment from UK companies such as Barclays Bank. They have been less successful in attracting investment from abroad. These cities cannot offer grants and other incentives which can be offered by Tyneside, England, and Bradford lacks large sites. The Yorkshire and Humberside development Agency (YHDA) has a new chief executive, John Siddall, who aims to attract investment to the region.

Leeds and Bradford: fighting fit
Article Abstract:
Bradford and Leeds are both located in Yorkshire, England, and their economies have been linked through the textile industry. The industry shed some 50% of its employment in Bradford between 1974 and 1984. Direct banking has grown in Leeds, and both cities have an entrepreneurial tradition. Unemployment is at some 10% and is distributed unevenly. Bradford's City Challenge and Leeds Development Corporation have sought to tackle this problem.
