Legal and General is benefiting from a rise in consumption in the UK which has also involved more demand for savings products. Demographic trends also favor the company as the population ages and state pension provision is reduced. Analysts forecasts sales growth of above 10% and the company forecasts a 14% rise in profits from life insurance in the five years from 1996. The company's overseas sales have also risen except for the US market. Legal and General's general insurance activities are forecast to remain in profit in 1996.

UK life insurers face problematic trading conditions and the company saw a drop in premium income for 1st half 1995. Legal and General saw an improvement in investment returns to 32.6 million pounds sterling for 1st half 1995 with a rise in profit from life insurance to 85 million pounds. The company reduced the number of life sales consultants by half to year-end 1994, reducing expenses and also leading to a drop in sales which has been halted. Margins have been affected despite lower costs and the company is seeking to increase volume sales and market share.
