Lessons from the past: profits are to be had from emerging markets. But the experiences of the emerging markets of the 19th century show that foreigners might not be best placed to reap them
Article Abstract:
Emerging markets have seen a boom in infrastructure investment, particularly in Asia, with some of the development being funded by foreign investors. In the 19th centurey European investors financed the railway boom in North America, an emerging market, which folowed the discovery of gold in California. British investors held more than $200 million worth of South American rail construction bonds in 1879, which led to the first Baring's crisis of 1890. The 1873 financial crisis led to a fall in most bank shares and a six year depression with more than 20,000 industrial failures, including most railways under construction.

Darby cracks the glass ceiling: shares in specialist glass maker Darby have performed poorly over the past 12 months. But flush with the proceeds from its rights issue, the company's depressed share price is due for a bounce
Article Abstract:
Darby, a specialist glass manufacturer, is issuing 10.8 m shares at 50p to raise 5 million pounds sterling. Around 2.1 million pounds sterling will go only new processing equipment and some 800,000 pounds sterling will purchase the 50% of Bent Tempered Glass, a subsidiary, which it does not already own. The company's underlying performance has been flat, in spite of a 42% rise in 1994-95 profits, and volumes only began to meet budget in May. Exports have risen faster since March than expected and the company is planing a significant distribution deal with Schollglas.
