Load knowledge affects low-back loading and control of balance in lifting tasks
Article Abstract:
The effect of load knowledge on low-back loading and the control of balance was investigated. Low-back loading was measured by the net sagittal plane torque at the lumbo-sacral joint, while the control of balance was studied by the position of the center of gravity (CoG) relative to the base support, the horizontal and vertical momentum of CoG and the angular momentum of the whole body. The absence of load knowledge may lead to dangerous events that contribute to higher risks of low-back injury in manual material handling tasks.

NIOSH equation horizontal distances associated with the Liberty Mutual (Snook) lifting table box widths
Article Abstract:
The NIOSH equation horizontal distances associated with the Liberty Mutual lifting table box widths was analyzed. Male and female subjects were asked to perform nine lifting conditions. The subjects showed similar horizontal distances to changing box widths and relative lift starting heights. Box width was observed to have significant interactions with horizontal distances and starting height.

Revised NIOSH equation for the design and evaluation of manual lifting tasks
Article Abstract:
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reviewed the literature on lifting and developed a revised lifting equation in 1991. Three criteria were used in defining the new equation and these were biomechanical, physiological and psychophysical. A review and discussion of the characteristics employed by the NIOSH in selecting the three criteria is presented.
