Electronic spreadsheet options other than Lotus 1-2-3 include Borland's Quattro, Microsoft's Excel, and the Surpass Software System's Surpass program. All three products offer better graphics than Lotus 1-2-3, with Quattro and Excel having excellent improvements. Minimal recalculation and the capability to compare data from multiple worksheets are new features in the three programs. Surpass and Excel have multiple 'windows' for viewing multiple spreadsheets, macro recorders, an 'undo' feature for errors, and an optimized version. Unique attributes are an automatic column adjustment in Surpass, an automatic calculation suspension in Excel, and ease of installation for the $195 Quattro, which is the lowest-price, full-power Lotus alternative.

Corporate treasury managers who are in the process of purchasing computer hardware and software can avoid buying inappropriate technology by making thorough preparations. The user's needs should be stated in writing, and the vendor should agree to keep all of the user's proprietary information confidential. The vendor's references should be checked prior to making a commitment. The buyer should ask the vendor to develop a prototype of the system being sold. This allows the buyer to assess: the vendor's understanding of the buyer's business, and the ability of the vendor to deliver on promises. The contract drawn up between the vendor and the buyer should include and define all of the relevant requirements such as price and delivery times.
