Making a synergistic relationship work
Article Abstract:
Venture capitalists join in partnerships with entrepreneurs to make money; conversely, entrepreneurs join with venture capitalists to get start-up money. This is the basis of their synergistic relationship. Making that relationship work is analyzed. To be effective, the relationship must allow both partners some managerial control over the enterprise being started. Venture capitalists can assist entrepreneurs in hiring management accountants, recruiting a sales staff, and developing a competitive marketing strategy. Often, however, the entrepreneur prefers to run the business himself once the venture capital has been provided. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to use venture capitalists' expertise by employing them as quasi-financial directors. Communication between entrepreneur and venture capitalists should be frequent and frank, and the format for the monthly and quarterly financial reports from the entrepreneur to the capitalist should be mutually agreed upon and benefit both parties.
