Making values count in business: the challenge for standard-setters is to create the conditions for business where social and environmental benefits go hand in hand with competitive advantage
Article Abstract:
Companies are increasingly measuring their social performance using a variety of tools collectively known as social and ethical accounting, auditing and reporting (SEAAR). The New Economics Foundation, together with the Institute of Social and Ethical Accountability, examines the current status of the SEAAR field in the report titled 'Making Values Count.' It presents recommendations to ensure that the practice of SEAAR in the future will really improve the transparency, the accountability and, eventually, the social, environmental and economic performance of all organizations. The report presents a Quality Scoring Framework for use in evaluating SEAAR initiatives. It is based on SEAAR's eight quality principles, including completeness, comparability, external verification, continuous improvement and inclusivity.

An effective compensation program is essential to international business success. British companies are particularly weak in this area and need to eliminate firmly entrenched concepts about pay and incentives and to encourage performance-related behavior if they are to succeed in the global marketplace. The UK still has a long way to go to catch up with the US, where the idea of linking executive compensation to the creation of shareholder value has wide acceptance. There is growing evidence that British companies are not getting real value from their generous executive pay packages mainly because they use the wrong measures of performance and set targets that are not high enough to bolster performance.
