Matching compensation and organizational strategies
Article Abstract:
A survey of 192 personnel executives in manufacturing firms was conducted to analyze how pay strategies are affected by organizational strategies. Research results indicate that corporate strategy is an important predictor of compensation package design, pay administration procedures, and pay level in connection with the market. Research results also indicate that business unit strategy was also an important predictor of pay level in connection with the market as well as pay package design. Additionally, research results support ideas related to the concept of congruency which propose that the effectiveness of a pay system is partly a matter of how well organizational and pay strategies complement each other.

Toward a contingency theory of compensation strategy
Article Abstract:
Propositions are developed linking compensation systems and strategy. An underlying contention is that the existence of a tie between compensation strategy, the environment, and the organization affects the realization of intended pay strategies. Propositions are examined by sampling 72 non-high technology and 33 high technology business units or companies in the Boston Route 128 region. Respondents include managers who are responsible for compensation strategies.
