Meeting the cost of the millennium bug
Article Abstract:
The transition problem for computers in the Year 2000 could lead to social chaos as well as business disasters, and could affect nearly 30% of the gross domestic product of the United Kingdom. Some 98% of computers shipped prior to 1997 do not comply with measures to tackle the problem, and this applies to 47% of computers shipped in 1997. Information technology companies are benefiting from increased demand for their services, though they could face legal problems if there was a failure in their millennium work.

2000: a legal minefield
Article Abstract:
The year 2000 date change is causing concern to many information technology companies which could be subject to legal action if work they have done to tackle the problem is not successful. Some smaller companies are considering becoming bankrupt to avoid such legal action. There is a grey area with much uncertainty over legal responsibilities, but packaged software producers could face more serious problems than consultants who can specify precise terms for their contracts.

Bug bites even deeper, warns Logica
Article Abstract:
Logica has carried out research suggesting that budgets to tackle the Year 2000 computer transition problem could be as much as 20% too low. Data created by desktop users could be affected, and only 15% of companies are tackling the problem of PC desktops, with fewer than a third of those dealing with stored data. The problem can be tackled with software tools, and does not need highly skilled staff to remedy it. There is a shortage of skilled information technology staff.
