Megamergers and expanded scope: theories of bank size and activity diversity
Article Abstract:
Global banking institutions are racing to increase their size and scope through mergers in an effort to maximize shareholder value and/or improve the reputation of their management headed by the CEOs. This strategy is spawning megamergers such as the one between Chemical Bank Corp and Chase Manhattan and NationsBank's acquisition of Boatmen's Bancshares and Barnett Banks. One caveat of this desire among CEOs of major banks to enhance their reputation is that they may not be entirely rational in evaluating the expected value of such reputational benefits. It may even lead to herd behavior involving banks that expand their size and diversify their activities.
