Mercury World Mining: gold run
Article Abstract:
Mercury World Mining is an investment trust which is 33% invested in shares in gold mining companies and this represents protection against inflation. The trust specializes in metals and mining shares which should help buffer it should commodity prices weaken. Commodities tend to be affected by trade cycles and they show volatility. There is no hedge for risks related to currencies, so the trust is linked to the performance of the US dollar, but it has potential as a long-term investment.

Hoping for domestic bliss
Article Abstract:
Schroder UK Growth is an investment trust which specialises in UK investments. This does not make it safer than trusts investing abroad since single country trusts involve a higher risk level than trusts investing in a number of countries. The trust has performed well over the 12 months since it was issued and it focuses on exporters, cyclicals, industrials and financial service companies. The trust is geared to capital growth but gives a yield of some 3%.

Too much trust in windfalls
Article Abstract:
The Cairngorm Demutualisation Investment Trust will focus on building societies and companies that have recently shed their mutual status. Investors could benefit from further demutualisation windfalls, but there is no guarantee that there will be more demutualisations. The trust could perform well in the long term but major gains are not likely to be made in the short term in contrast to gains made by members of mutuals shedding their status in 1997.
