Monsanto's Bollgard potentially compromised in India
Article Abstract:
The government-run Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR) in Nagpur, India, reported that Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton planted there, is not as efficient in killing bollworms as it is in the US or China as it is not designed for India's longer ripening season. The findings prompted a nongovernmental organization to allege that US seed company Monsanto of St. Louis, Missouri, exported to India a technology primarily suited for Western markets and not for Indian farmers and raised concerns that bollworm resistance to Bt cotton could emerge in the country.

Bacterial lessons in sausage making
Article Abstract:
The reports on the genome sequence of highly specialized lactic acid bacterium, Lactobacillus sakei, are presented whose principle habitat is the surface of meats, where it prevents growth of unwanted organisms. In addition to having a role in food preservation and manufacture, lactic acid bacteria are believed to exert several beneficial effects such as stimulation of immune responses and outcompetition of potentially pathogenic bacteria.
