Moving thoughts about pensions
Article Abstract:
UK investors should consider the benefits and drawbacks oftransferring pensions. Many investors are concerned about the bad publicity the insuranceindustry has received over the mis-selling of pensions, and thus remain inactive. Employeesshould not usually consider a transfer into a scheme unless they plan to stay in that scheme forover two years. Employees should not consider transferring into a personal pension schemeunless they are unable to join an occupational scheme.

Ageing boost
Article Abstract:
Saving for pensions could have a major impact on markets in Europe. Dutch pensions assets are 84% of gross domestic product, and UK assets are 70%. In Italy it is only 1% and 5.7% in Germany. The Italian government is encouraging saving through private pensions, and other European governments will also have to do this in order to cut their budget deficits. This will increase the power of institutional investors in Europe to similar levels as are found in the UK.

The AVC of pensions
Article Abstract:
UK investors tend not to save as much for their pensions as the tax authorities permit. They can save through additional voluntary contributions (AVCs) which add to employers' contributions. Free standing additional voluntary contribution plans (FSAVCs) allow employees greater flexibility, since they are not tied to a company scheme, though they may be more expensive and tend to perform less well than AVCs which are supported by employers.
