HP 88781A Tape Drive

Hewlett-Packard Co's HP 88781A tape drive received a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design review. The HP 88781A is a data storage and retrieval system for telecommunications applications. Although it is based on old-type tape spools, it nevertheless gained commendation for its straightforward design, which is exemplified by the austere cobalt blue of the upper tape spool, the repetition of the circular form of the tape spools in the half-circle of the cabinet handle and the simple graphics design.

Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co's HP ScanJet IIc scanner won a gold award in the equipment category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. Hewlett-Packard's entry into the low-cost scanner market, the HP IIc was praised for its simple form and attention to detail. A scalloped recess has been added to accomodate the bulky cover binding, and the placement and appearance of electrical and mechanical parts visible through the glass scanning surface were well-planned. Externally, the HP IIc was designed along unobstrusive and elegant lines.
