New carrier to cost $8 billion, not $13 billion, admiral says
Article Abstract:
Rear Admiral David Architzel, program executive officer for aircraft carriers said that the criticism piled on the cost of the next generation VCN 21 air-craft carrier was unfair. He added that the ship would cost only $8 billion if the cost for the immense research and development needed to produce the lead ship of the VCN 21 class, is not included in the overall cost.

DD(X), and Bath Iron, still face threats despite Congressional action
Article Abstract:
A US Congressional action to save Bath Iron Works and to ensure it builds the DD(X) destroyer might inadvertently result in the demise of the whole ship construction program. The attempt to avoid awarding a winner-take-all contract that would save US$300 million per ship would end in making the whole venture unaffordable.
