New generation of mutual funds
Article Abstract:
The popularity of segregated funds, which is also known as the new generation of mutual funds, is expected to grow in 1998. The rise in segregated funds' popularity can be attributed to a growing concern with capital preservation and the continuance of low guaranteed deposits. Also, the projected channeling of a large portion of RRSP-earmarked savings into investment funds by taxpayers is expected to boost the popularity of segregated funds.

Change foreign-content rules
Article Abstract:
It is argued that the Canadian government should now lift the 20% ceiling on foreign content in RRSPs and pension funds. The ageing population places pressure on both public and private pension funds, with attention then concentrating on asset growth. As growth is equivalent to return, the foreign-content limit should be raised.
